Disaster in Time (PG-13) - Jeff Daniels stars in a very well-done time travel flick - hard to find - not on DVD, not in many rental stores. If you can find it (it finally showed on cable) it's worth the viewing. (Breaks some of the time travel rules) - RATING: 8 Enemy Mine (PG-13) - A survival story (co-staring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.) about being dependent on your enemy - awesome makeup for Gossett. Great acting from both. Classic - RATING: 8 The Fifth Element (PG-13) - Has science fiction, comedy, gun (laser) fights, a singing blue diva, great acting from Willis, Jovovich, Oldman, Tucker and Holm, interlinking plots clips (just great) - what more could you ask for? (Does anyone else want to negotiate?) - RATING: 10 Fortress (R) - Pretty good flick about a prison break (with scifi slant). Stars Christopher Lambert (grungy, but as always, sexy). Pretty bloody at times, but interesting plot - Jeffrey Combs steals the show - RATING: 7 Frequency (PG-13) - Dennis Quaid stars. I just love movies about timelines and time travel (i.e. The Terminator, Time After Time, Time Cop), and I can't say too much without giving away the story. This is such a great flick...the Aurora Borealis helps reacquaint a father and his son across time. Frequency is awesome. A different approach on the time theme! Get the DVD version to view, lots of extras! - RATING: 8 Frighteners (R) - Big doses of horror, mixed with comedy, and a mystery - not a "slasher" movie, but still pretty darn creepy. Not for the kiddies. - RATING: 10 Gattaca (P-13) - This came on cable one day - and I didn't have anything else to do, so I gave it a whirl - was surprised how much I liked it. A bit strange - but intriguing scifi. - RATING: 7 Johnny Mnemonic (R) - This is another movie that the critics didn't like. Do I really care? No, I don't. Johnny Mnemonic is one of my favorite movies. This movie is based on the brilliant short story by William Gibson. Gibson is a visionary (sadly). There is too much truth to this science fiction story. I believe this is one of Keanu Reeves best acting roles. A real treat to watch Dina Meyer also. Johnny Mnemonic also stars Henry Rollins, Udo Kier, Iced-T and Dolf Lundgren. If Johnny Mnemonic was released now, after the success of Matrix, it would be a hit. The world wasn't ready for Johnny in 1995. - RATING: 10 Lexx - the 4 movie series (R) - Lots of gore, lots of sex appeal, lots of violence, lots of special F/X, a bunch of disembodied brains, one beautiful sex slave/cluster lizard, one gorgeous dead guy, one "Tweedle," one sexy cannibal and one robot head, plus a cast of characters including Rutger Hauer and Malcolm McDowell. Need I say more? - RATING: 10 Lost Boys (R) - My all time favorite vampire movie. Sprinkled with lots of lighter moments, this movie wins all around. Features Keifer Sutherland in one of his finer roles. - RATING: 10 Omega Doom - Okay - so not everyone agrees with me on this one - not many think this movie was worth it's reelage. (I can't even find a complimentary thing about this flick on the internet). True, some may think it's boring, just about the entire movie takes place on one city street. Rutger Hauer (and the entire cast) play androids. Some may think the plot seems lame - but if you look deeper, isn't it really about the survival of humankind? (pretty important, if you ask me). Oh, well, if you want to veg out and watch this film (has a lot of android walking noises - schwee, schwoo, schwee, schwoo) this is the flick for you. - RATING: S.F.M.W.H.T.L.*
Outland (R) - A good futuristic movie. Ore mining on IO, the occasional miner acts irrational, can't say too much more - good mystery (more futuristic than scifi). Yellow Dog says that it is "High Noon." More of a thinking movie - not bogged down with special effects (doesn't need 'em). Starring Sean Connery and Peter Boyle - RATING: 8
Resident Evil (R) - To be honest, I have never played the game, and didn't know the story line. I watched it because Milla Jovovich is in it. Anyway - the flick started out (slow), with some promise, but quickly turned into a remake of "Night of the Living Dead." The creature in the movie reminded me of John Carpenter's "The Thing" and made me wish I was watching that instead. (Though, I have to say, it is always fun to watch Jovovich kicking some ass). The best part of the movie (the last 10 minutes) was with Milla (sans zombies). I guess the movie had too many rip-offs from other films (NofLD, The Thing and The Cube to mention a few) - RATING: 4
Sleepy Hollow (R) - A movie worth watching for the sets alone! Tim Burton dazzles us again with his gothic style and fantastic movie sets. This movie is not for the faint-hearted. Very realistic beheadings a-plenty. This gothic/mystery flick features Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken (playing a very chilling role!) - RATING: 9 Tank Girl - Lori Petti plays girl with attitude who rules her destiny - Great "in your face" fun. Comic book pics slashed into the movie, all that and Malcolm McDowell too! - RATING: 9 Tom's Midnight Garden (PG-13) - A wonderful "feel-good" movie about a boy who visits a garden from the past when his aunt's clock strikes 13. Not scifi (except for the fact that it is time travel). Good old fashioned movie that will make you laugh and make you cry. Definitely worth the viewing! - RATING: 9 *Science Fiction movies we hate to love
Fantasy movies we hate to love (F.M.W.H.T.L.) Willow - I personally think Val Kilmer was adorable with long black hair. - RATING: F.M.W.H.T.L. Krull - Pretty strange flick - My favorite scene was with the huge spider, and the spider "keeper" and her hourglass - RATING: F.M.W.H.T.L. Dragonheart (PG-13) - Okay, I really liked this one - no one else I know seems to, but what's with Dennis Quaid's voice? - isn't he trying too hard to make it deeper? Sean Connery is perfect as Drak - RATING: 7
Animation NEW: Spirited Away - Hayao Miyazaki enchants us again with Spirited Away. A big fan of Princess Mononoke, I was more than equally drawn in by the wonderful story and breathtaking animation of Spirited Away. If you get the DVD (2-disc set) you can also enjoy a very complete making of Spirited Away (in Japanese with subtitles). Just wonderful! - RATING: 10 Ghost in the Shell - One of the best anime movies you will see - This is a DVD must. Watch it with subtitles. Truly genius at work here. If you really want to appreciate clean, sharp, beautiful work, watch "Ghost in the Shell." Okay for older kids, some nudity and violence. (Parents might want to preview it first) - RATING: 10 Princess Mononoke - Princess Mononoke is up there with Ghost in the Shell - Awesome animation and a pretty deep plot for an animated movie - on the long side too (which is just fine to tell the story). You just gotta love the Kodama (Tree Spirits). - RATING: 10 The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle (PG) - What an excellent cartoon (done in the style of "The Hobbit.") The songs are haunting (song by America), the story captivating. A true fantasy animation. I read the book first, then found out about the movie (adaptation almost exact). Voices of Arkin, Bridges, and Farrow (her singing was so-so) but such a small flaw in the film. "How dare you come to me now - when I am this." - Molly Grue (an emotional cartoon moment). Okay for kids, but the Harpy might scare some of the little ones. - RATING: 9
